Getting started with ESP32

The practical basics: choosing a board profile, using a data-capable USB-C cable and running a first project.

Most first-time ESP32 problems are not caused by the board itself. A few setup checks remove most of the common friction.

Use a data-capable USB cable

A USB-C cable that charges a phone is not necessarily wired for data. If the board powers up but no serial port appears, test with a known data-capable cable.

Select an appropriate board profile

For a generic WROOM-32 development board, “ESP32 Dev Module” is a common Arduino IDE starting point. ESP32-C3 and S3 boards require profiles that match their processor family and memory configuration.

Remember the 3.3 V logic level

ESP32 GPIO is 3.3 V logic. Do not assume a peripheral’s 5 V signal can be connected directly to an ESP32 GPIO.
